The Dutch government is providing €1 million to revamp the permanent exhibition in the Dutch Pavilion at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Driving the news: Minister Mirjam Sterk announced the funding during a visit to the former Nazi camp in Poland, where the national display has remained unchanged since 2005.

Why it matters: Sterk stated that preserving authentic historical sites is increasingly urgent as the remaining Holocaust eyewitnesses pass away. Updating the pavilion aims to better address the educational needs and perspectives of modern visitors.

By the numbers:

  • 1.1 million people were murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz, including Jews, Sinti, and Roma.
  • 58,000 of the roughly 104,000 people deported from the Netherlands died at the complex.
  • The Dutch government has maintained the exhibition in barrack 21 since 1980.

What is next: The Nederlands Auschwitz Comité and the Nationaal Holocaustmuseum (National Holocaust Museum) will design the modernized exhibition, while talks continue with independent funds to secure additional co-financing.
